HISTORY

In 2009 I started hunting hogs at night, with thermal optics exclusively, professionally. It meant sighting in my weapons when I put new optics on or checking zero nightly before each hunt. 160x120 with 19mm lenses. These were incredibly short range, low resolution thermals and I was sighting in at 25 yards.

Sighting in a thermal weapons sight presents problems you don’t get with traditional daytime optics. It only sees heat. Gone are the days of drawing rings with a sharpie on cardboard and shooting it. You can’t see ink or print with a thermal. So began my search for ‘thermal targets’.

Behind my barn was a woodshed with a 15ftx30ft pile of lumber scraps and various materials leftover from decades of handyman projects the previous owner had done. It included old tin Realestate signs and various shapes of 3/4 inch plywood and 2x12’s. The tin and steel scrap was the easiest to use. once you shot it, it left a very bright, crisp heat signature. You could zero in on it with the crosshairs and basically use your first shot as the bullseye and make adjustments to your scope without having to walk downrange and see the holes. You could see them with the scope. They were great while they lasted but after a few weeks of hunting everynight, they looked like metallic Swiss cheese. The wood scraps were the same but disappeared very quickly when you have to sight in or check zero on 3 or 4 rifles… every day. Once I zeroed them , I’d let the customer shoot a plastic bottle full of warm water to shoot after the safety brief. (so I could save my precious scraps for precise zeroing you can’t get with bottles)

A few years later…At the bottom of the pile was a piece of white plastic about 2ftx3ft and an inch thick.. I shot it. By this time I was using 640x480 resolution thermals and was shooting at 50 yards. I could see my first shot clearly, it remained visible for about 10 minutes in the cool night air. I used that first shot to sight in my scope. No more plastic bottle scavenging.. Since 2012, the customers shoot this target and then shoot at their first impact point as it is clearly visible. to date, its been shot over 7000 times with a mixture of 223 and 308 rounds at 50 yards. It still has the same crisp, easily visible heat signature it had on day one. Now it can be yours.

THIS IS FOR HI-POWERED RIFLES ONLY, LOW VELOCITY ROUNDS SUCH AS AIR RIFLES, SHOTGUNS, HANDGUNS, OR RIMFIRE WILL BOUNCE OFF AND HARM YOU! .233 AND UP !
